This hike was a side quest off the Northeast 111 list: Owl’s Head, the fire-tower peak by Long Lake. I camped the night before and started up on a sunny June afternoon, with friends along for the summit.
The fire tower is the point of Owl’s Head. I climbed it on a clear, sunny day, and the view from the cab was the one I came for.
Two friends stood with me at the top. We took the group shot, then I got one of myself on the summit and another from the top of the tower.
A side quest like this doesn’t move the 111 count. It was still a full day: camp the night before, a fire-tower summit with friends, and a walk out at the end of the afternoon with no poles and no bugs.
